How to Prepare Your South Florida Roof for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season in South Florida runs June through November, and your roof is the first line of defense. A little preparation now can prevent thousands of dollars in interior damage later. Here is the checklist we give our Broward and Miami-Dade customers.
1. Schedule a pre-season inspection
A professional inspection catches the small problems — lifted shingles, cracked tiles, worn flashing — that turn into major leaks under hurricane-force wind and rain. Get this done before the first named storm forms.
2. Fix the weak spots
Common vulnerabilities we repair before storm season:
- Loose or missing shingles and tiles
- Failing flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
- Clogged gutters and blocked drains
- Soft or rotted roof decking
3. Document your roof's condition
Take dated photos of your roof while it is in good shape. If a storm hits, this "before" record makes your insurance claim far easier to support.
4. Know what to do after a storm
If you find a leak or visible damage, call a licensed roofer for emergency tarping right away to stop water intrusion — then schedule a full inspection and repair.
